Caroline Coolidge Brown

Caroline's paintings and collages explore the use of text, story and symbol. Several themes seem to have emerged and informed her work including the lovely organic shapes and bright colors of summer flowers which led her to explore floral compositions, which then drew her to focus on birds within the Annunciation paintings as symbols of the Holy Spirit; as well as other major themes which have been drawn from Mary and her Catholic history. Caroline combines a number of antique prints and photos and layers them with abstract and realistic painting and drawing to create a rich surface.

Cynthia Ryan

Cynitha is a curious and passionate student of life. She sees the genuine inner glow of everything, as if looking through a window at a hidden treasure within. Having spent years of studying art and photography as well as working in high-end commercial television before returning to her love of art and Italy. She now divides her time between North Carolina and Italy with her partner and fellow artist Domenico Romano.

Domenico Romano

Domenico has been perfecting the skill of miniature art painting for almost twenty years. It was in Positano, Italy that he discovered his love for "plein air" painting. He is one of a few, if not the only artist painting on a miniature scale "en plain air". His technique of using oil paintings in an almost transparent manner on archival quality paper board renders a most delicate and exquisite effect. A steady hand and a commitment to quality, growth and sincerity as an artist make a Romano miniature a true work of art to be treasured. Explore your "Terrain"

For the month of August we have been featuring Kate Vassur's art in an incredible exhibit titled "Terrain". If you haven't seen it yet make sure you stop by before August 29th. Her ambiguous forms of faded tree lines and strokes of motion give the viewer a sense of connection to places they may have been long ago or places in their mind's eye they would like to go. Inspiration for the works in the series are the natural scapes that surround Kate as well as the wood grain on the panels which she paints.

Kate Vasseur grew up in Florida with her parents who spend many Saturdays looking for treasures in local flea markets and encouraged an artistic flair in their kids with daily art projects. After completing her degree at Elon University in Elon, NC, Kate moved out west to California to soak up experiences of life as a full-time artist. Kate has returned to NC and now resides in Charlotte where she has been working on her craft ever since.

Kate appreciates exploring many forms when painting. Landscapes have always been special to her and are the pieces that resonate most in her portfolio. She would like to invite you to the places she sees as she continues to explore in this form in vision. In emotion.

Marybela Souder

Marybela Souder has been creating since the age of three, refining her keen imagination to create abstract paintings and impressionistic landscapes. Marybela graduated Cum Laude from the International Academy of Design in Tampa with a degree in Advertising with concentrations in design, marketing and copywriting. Using her accumulated skills, she strives to create art that is creative, affordable and marketable while keeping her focus centered around the colorful imagination.

"Impressionism and abstract art come very easily to me, because my focus is color," states Marybela when describing her work.

Jessica Surles

Jessica Surles began creating at a young age; taking art classes, designing jewelery to sell locally and creating artistic murals from her own bedroom walls. Jessica pursued her BS in elementary education with a concentration in visual arts from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. After graduation, she moved to Charlotte to begin her teaching career.

Jessica is now cultivating her love for the arts and education, recently becoming involved in two local non-profit organizations: Equitas and A Better World; both provide opportunities for children lacking in resources for equal -opportunity education.
Jessica uses her art to raise money for education funds both locally and internationally.

We are delighted to have Isaac Payne as our Featured Artist at Green Rice Gallery in our newest exhibition entitled: Charcoal Cities: Drawings of People and Places, which will be up for month of June.

Isaac gathers his inspiration from childhood memories and photographs taken from his travels and places he has lived, then creates the subject matter using a process of reflection and invention.

Carefully choosen colors amongst a muted color pallette add to the visually alluring images; creating a sense of mystery that can represent scenes everywhere in general yet nowhere specific.

We especially enjoy the larger scale of most of his pieces that create a strong pressence; exciting the viewer. The often imposing angles of the city/landspaces have a dramatic effect, making you feel pulled into each scene in a powerful way. His figuarative drawings remain aloof

Meet Olive!

This is Olive, she is an original metal sculpture by Rich Nossel and currently lives here at Green Rice. However, she is looking for a new home; either indoor OR outdoor works just fine. She is about 5 1/2 feet tall and 5 feet long (including the bicycle). Made entirely of metal, her bike is created from recycled metal parts, and her body is constructed of hundreds of metal washers. She is coated with an olive green paint and she is designed to naturally rust for that aged petina. And so does our featured exhibit once a month! This month we are excited to showcase the work of one of our very own resident artists; Holt McLean! It has been almost a full 2 years since her last solo show here, and I can assure you, it was worth the wait. Her palette knife oil paintings of NC treescapes are the featured subject matter this year. Portrayed in winter, spring, summer and fall, her seasonally inspired creations are a beautiful sight to behold. Enticing pathways wind their way through many of her pieces, inviting you to take a leisurely stroll through the forest. Mother Nature can't even compete with the beauty and serenity of Holt's Changing of the Seasons exhibit. Come out tonight and feel the excitement as we celebrate Holt's Opening Meet the Artist Reception from 7-9pm at Green Rice Gallery! The show will run from May 7th - 30th. We want to thank the wonderful folks at Yoga One for choosing Green Rice as the place to celebrate their event! The up and coming Salivate Catering Company, owned by Sally Wright, provided beautiful table settings and the most delicious food you can imagine! We highly recommend contacting Salivate for your next event. They were professional, sweet as can be, and they really know how to decorate! Their prosciutto wrapped pear with just a hint of cheese was to die for!

A field of pink balloons floated across the floor as attendees mingled in the candlelit ambiance. The featured art of Katherine Blackwell made for the perfect backdrop as you can see from the photos, but don't forget to stop in tonight to see her incredible paintings in person! Tonight is the perfect night for a gallery crawl, and we just happen to be hosting one!!! Stop by and say "hi", we're here til at least 9pm!

Our resident mosaic artist Teresa Hollmeyer stopped in yesterday and dropped off a whole new bright and colorful series of glass mosiac pieces. We have kissing fishies, small gift priced multi-colored hearts, a gorgeous peacock, her oh-so-popular coneflowers, and so much more! They are perfect for this time of year when the sun shines through your window to catch the colors in her beautiful glass mosaics.

Working Artist Studios Now Available at Green Rice Gallery!

Green Rice Gallery in the heart of NoDa has 12 working Artist Studios, and two have just become available! Our Artist Studios are open to the public during normal Gallery hours. Our clients are invited to tour the gallery as well as the studios, meet with our resident artists, and purchase artwork. Studio Artists have 24 hour access to their studio. Artists are expected to use their studios to produce, display, and sell their art. All work must be available for sale to the public. Green Rice provides a Gallery Representative on duty during normal business hours, so Artists need not be present in order for their work to be sold. Acceptable studio media are fine arts such as painting, sculpting, mixed media etc. Applicants and media are subject to Gallery approval.

Queen of Hearts

In October of 2009, Green Rice Gallery owner Carla Garrison and Artist Paul Hastings sat down over a few glasses of wine at NoDa’s Dolce Vita for a brainstorming session. The purpose of this meeting of artistic minds was to come up with the perfect donation for what they believe to be one of the most important fundraisers here in Charlotte; the American Heart Association’s Annual Heart Ball Auction. After numerous ideas about what might excite the bidders, they came to the most obvious conclusion…the city of Charlotte itself!

Although the two artists have slightly different styles, their close friendship and similar tastes (as well as a passionate love for painting) provided them with the perfect combination of talents to create a unique and colorful version of the Charlotte skyline. Paul and Carla decided that the skyline must be on a large canvas, and Paul’s handy creative side led him to construct a frame for the canvas out of a recycled door. He built rounded sides and affixed them to the door, then stretched a canvas tightly over the frame. The duo then prepared the canvas and began to paint the perfect Carolina blue sky, a color so beautiful that Paul could “almost lick the palette knife like it was frosting!”.

Next came the fluffiest clouds for the most beautiful day, and then on to the buildings which formed a near perfect triangle; the sturdiest and strongest form according to the old masters of the Renaissance period. Paul blocked in the building colors, exaggerated to create a dynamic effect, while Carla provided the tiniest of details, bringing the piece together for a finished product. As the piece came to a close, they discussed how on earth to sign the piece cohesively. After some wise words from a fellow artist, they signed the piece as Garrison & Hastings, Inc., on a building in the lower left corner. The big reveal came during a volunteer’s meeting at Ruth’s Chris on February 2nd. The piece, titled “Queen of Hearts” will be included in the silent auction at the Heart Ball on February 13th at the Civic Center. The painting is approximately 80” x 32” and is oil on canvas.

Carla Garrison is the owner of the Green Rice Gallery in Charlotte’s Historic Arts District known as NoDa, and Paul Hastings is an Artist featured in the Red Sky Gallery. The duo met two years ago at Green Rice when Paul moved his studio into the gallery, they became fast friends and artistic soul mates immediately. They plan to work together on many more collaborative works of art. As Paul states, “we never came to blows, nobody got hurt, so I guess we make a pretty good pair!”, and Carla responded with, “well, he brought me snacks, so of course it worked out!”.

Meet our newest addition to Green Rice, Adam Ramsey Miller! After being honorably discharged from the Marines, Adam studied art at Delta State University in Cleveland, MS. While in school, he supported himself by working at a local Cajun restaurant named "Crawdads" , meanwhile spending hundreds of hours in his studio training himself to paint. During his experimentation, he discovered abstract layering techniques that incorporate photo landscapes which are constructed using collage techniques.

Adam uses a wide range of mixed media in his work, stepping far outside of the box when it comes to creativity. His pieces evoke a feeling of nostalgia, a glimpse into the past to a simpler time. After capturing his own photos, he manipulates them for just the right effect, then applies them onto a wood panel layered with mixed media; a combination of acrylic, oil, wood stain, etc. It is then sealed with a high gloss polyurethane for a beautifully finished look.

Adam recently moved to Gold Hill, NC in July 2009 where he currently lives and has a painting studio in a converted feed shack. Using inspiration from both Mississippi and North Carolina, his work is about displacement of the present and the past, and the linking of the two.

Opening Friday, October 2nd with a Meet the Artist Reception from 7-9pm, Green Rice Gallery welcomes Artist Kate Vasseur’s new show entitled “The Fifth Season”. Kate’s work brings to life a variety of media, from watercolors on wooden panels and canvases to jewelry and sculpture created from repurposed objects. Her paintings have been described as modern landscapes that draw emotion from places we all seem to have been before. Kate’s quest for the unique, functional and purely aesthetic serves as her artistic inspiration. “The Fifth Season” will run from October 2nd through November 1st.

Also, Jonathan K. Rice and Scott Douglass, editors of Iodine Poetry Journal and Main Street Rag, will host a Poetry Reading at Green Rice Gallery on Friday, October 16th, from 7 - 9pm. Local Poets whose work is appearing in the current issues of these magazines will be featured readers. This will be the second time that Iodine has hosted a Reading here, so if you missed out last year, we're giving you a second chance!

New Studios Are Finally Open!

How do you fight back in a recession? You expand! At least that is what Green Rice Gallery is doing! During the weekend of July 4th, gallery owner Carla Garrison went to work on building 7 new studio spaces in her newly acquired 1,100 square feet of gallery space here at 451 E. 36th St. The spaces will be open to the public and inhabited by working artists who can use the space to create and display their newest works. Viewers are encouraged to stop by and meet the newest additions to Green Rice Gallery on August 1st, otherwise known as move-in day!

One of the incoming artists is Holt McLean, whose space will be used for creating, displaying and even teaching! Beginning August 31st, Holt’s School of Fine Art will open for youth art classes. McLean taught youth art classes from 2002 – 2005 in California before moving to North Carolina, and she taught urban youth in 2005 at the NoDa School of the Arts. Green Rice also welcomes sculptor Marilyn Overton, abstract artist Rick Babusci, photographer Rachel Barker, mural painter Adela Jurca, as well as painters Leah Edwards, Ivory Medina and Pete Brown. The official grand studio opening will be held during the Charlotte Literary Festival in NoDa on Saturday, September 5th. "Through the Looking Glass" Opens Tonight!

We all know what Alice saw when she went through the looking glass, now it is our Green Rice Artist’s turn to show the public what wondrous things they might see in theirs! Opening Friday, July 3rd, we will host a new show entitled Through the Looking Glass. As Lewis Carroll stated,

"The world is a looking-glass, and gives back to every man
the reflection of his own face. Frown at it, and it will in turn look sourly
upon you; laugh at it and with it, and it is a jolly kind companion”.

The show will run from July 3rd to August 2nd and will feature over 10 of our artists with broadly varying styles of work. From oils to acrylics, woodwork to mixed media sculpture, be prepared to expect the unexpected! Participating artists include Paul Hastings, Carla Garrison, Jay Thompson, Aaron Alderman, Holt McLean, Dwight Hartsell, Jason Basden, Laura Arecco, Wendy Arundel, Randy L. New Artists!

This month we are excited to welcome 3 new artists to Green Rice! First off, we have Herb Dickinson - Herb has been painting for over 20 years, from illustrations for science projects as a child to five years of art classes in yound adulthood. Herb enjoys all styles of art, however, modern, abstract and impressionism in acrylic provide an outlet for mixing texture, colors and nature together. His paintings start with a sketch and color palette but in the process of creating, take a life of their own and give a delightful surprise at the finished results.

We are also excited to introduce Brandon Willett - Brandon graduated college with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Concentration of Illustration and a Minor in Drawing and Art History. His work is a mixture of pop art with almost a grafitti feel to it and focuses on shape, color and bold lines.

And last but certainly not least we have Andrew Smock! After growing up in Chicago, Smock attended Ohio University where he studied art. He makes his living as a graphic artist and paints landscapes on the side (which we have brought into the gallery for all to see!). Smock now lives in Charlotte and paints in his studio in Area 15 right here in NoDa!

From the Bronze Age through the Iron Age to the present, metalwork has flourished in art, industry and trade. By the 1700’s the village blacksmith ensured the economic survival of early America, making the implements and equipment used in farming, business, and even in the common household. After industrialization, when ironwork could be provided by factories, blacksmiths reinvented themselves, putting their age-old hand forging talents to more creative endeavors. The studio craft movement began in the middle of the past century, allowing the floodgates of creativity to be thrown wide open and unbridled abandon to flow freely. Standing on the shoulders of the metal giants who have preceded them, we welcome J. Aaron Alderman, Steven Sinnett, Mindy Jacobs, Theron Ross and Marilyn Overton as they celebrate their ageless legacy of metalsmithing.

Celebrate with us during the Meet the Artists Reception on Friday, June 5th from 7 - 9pm. Also joining us will be Megan from PRP Wine International as she hosts a wine tasting during the reception.

PERSISTENT NIGHTMARES: New Abstract Drawings by Andrea Worley

Andrea Worley’s new abstract drawings give spontaneous and energetic form to the frightening nightmares she has experienced—and recorded in detail—over more than 30 years. With their underlying physical, psychological, and sexual tensions, these stark black and white abstractions conjure up the raw and ragged edge between something recognizable and that profound abyss within us all. Each drawing is accompanied by a dated section from the nightmare that gave rise to it. Worley, a native of Chattanooga, received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Tennessee and her Master of Fine Arts from East Tennessee State University. Her studio is near Earl, North Carolina. The show will run from May 1st - 22nd.

POSTGIG

PostGig is a compilation of music posters and highlights the role of art and design in the music scene. The show features works and original concert posters by Modern Dog, Aesthetic Apparatus, Hammerpress, Patent Pending, The Small Stakes and many more. It is curated by Clifford Stoltze, founder of Stoltze Design in Boston, MA, and compliments the recent launch of his book 1000 Music Graphics.

The show was a huge success in Boston and is making a stop here at Green Rice Gallery in Charlotte's NoDa District as it travels to different cities drawing a diverse audience. PostGig's opening reception on Friday, April 17th from 7-9pm coincides with a NoDa Gallery Crawl and the exhibition will be open to the public April 17th – 27th. The Sold Project: Thailand

The Sold Project is a grassroots organization dedicated to inspiring individuals to join the fight against child prostitution. In 2007, a group of 20-somethings went to Thailand for a summer to research the plight of child exploitation, and they walked away with a dream of creating change. The result was a film: The Sold Project: Thailand. Sold's goal is to help everyone realize that they have a unique voice and a unique opportunity to join the fight against child prostitution and that their response to this situation actually does matter.

The Sold Project: Thailand will be screened at the Green Rice Gallery on Sunday, March 22 at 4:30pm and 6pm. Special guests Rachel Sparks and Rachel Goble will share about their experiences and knowledge from their time in Thailand. Jeremy Ezell will be serenading us before each screening. Please join us in this important cause - we hope to see you there!

"An Unclear Sky" by Kendra Baird

Green Rice Gallery will host “An Unclear Sky” featuring new works by Artist Kendra Baird, opening on March 6th from 7-9pm with a Meet the Artist Reception. Also included will be a wine tasting by PRP Wine International, featuring wine personalized with images of Kendra’s latest works. One of Kendra's original works will be included in a raffle as well, each ticket will be $10 and the drawing will be held on March 29th. Don't miss this chance to win an original work of art!

The show will run from March 6th until March 29th. Baird’s work over the past few years has evolved from quirky little creatures in nature into a deeper subject beyond the object we see on the surface. The nature of how uncertain our futures are, and how at any given time – no matter how aware we are of our life, the world around us and ourselves – we can never see the entire picture. She displays this in her work through using a frame of texture and color that crops the scene. We can only imagine what is hidden by this frame, and we step forward knowing what we can and hoping for what we cannot know. There will always be those things that make our view unclear, but the portions that we can see give us comfort and help us rest in peace when moving forward.

Come to Green Rice on Thursday nights and learn the techniques of oil painting with local professional artist Paul Hastings. Paul (or as we call him, the Magic Man) will offer guidance and gentle criticisms as you paint your selected subject in a gallery setting. Your subject matter can be a picture you have always wanted to paint, a page from a magazine you find beautiful, or simply the still life we set up here in the gallery. Prior painting experience is not necessary. Each class is $30/session and will take place on Thursday evenings from 6-8pm. Classes will be held at the Green Rice Gallery right in the heart of the NoDa Arts District and they will begin on February 12th.

NEW SHOW IN FEBRUARY!

We will be featuring Green Rice Artist Matt Hooker from February 6th - March 1st in a show entitled "Art of Foreign Lands" which will include a Meet the Artist Reception from 7-9 on Friday, February 6th! A self-proclaimed "under travelled artist", Matt is a native Bostonian currently living in Charlotte, NC. during his senior year in high school, his first painting ever completed was shown in a Boston college senior art show. Over ten years later, he started selling paintings primarily through the Internet and is now living a long time dream; an existence supported by and for artwork. This self-taught artist has appeared in various Boston and Charlotte area publications, studios, galleries, businesses and marketplaces.

Also featured will be artist KC Collins, KC attended Elon University in North Carolina and began exploring artistic media, including oils, acrylics, watercolors, pencil, pastels, and a variety of mixed media. She explored art history and drew influences from JWM Turner, Franz Klein, and Gerhard Richter.

Fort Mill Art Guild Meeting

The Fort Mill Art Guild has signed a lease for approx. 2000 sf of space at 213 Main Street in Downtown Fort Mill, and proudly announces President Marcia Kort Buike. The facility will be not only host meetings of the Guild, but will also serve as a community arts center, featuring classes, exhibits, lectures, demonstrations, outreach programs and a gallery for local artists of the Carolinas.

The new facility will be called The Art Mill and hopes to open its doors mid-January. The Guild is seeking local community members to serve as volunteers, patrons, donors, advocates as well as exhibitors. Membership fees and donations are tax-deductible as the Guild is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation.

The next meeting of the Guild will be Tuesday, January 13, 2009, 7 pm at The Spratt Building, 215 Main Street in downtown Fort Mill. We will start with a short update of Guild activities, followed by our keynote speaker, Carla Garrison, owner of Green-Rice Gallery in the NoDa section of Charlotte. She will tell us the ins and outs of the gallery world and, in particular, what an artist must do to get his/her work in a gallery. We will then move over to The Art Mill next door for a sneak preview of the facilities.

Register for Drawing Classes at Green Rice!

Not only are we offering a Figure Drawing Group on Tuesdays, but to all of you who are intimidated by drawing in general, we will now be offering Drawing Classes starting in February! We will offer a Monday night class and a Wednesday night class to accomodate your different schedules.

The class will meet once a week, for 8 weeks beginning on Monday nights from 6:00 to 8:00 or on Wednesday nights from 6:00 to 8:00 at Green Rice Gallery, starting February 2nd and ending March 23rd for Monday classes, or starting February 5th and ending March 25th for Wednesday classes.

Sign up now, because each class can only take 5 students and this will fill up fast!

Everyone pre-teen years and up are welcome and no prior experience is needed. Basic instruction in drawing and helpful techniques will be offered to all students by a knowledgeable and experienced instructor.

The cost for this 8 week session is $280. This includes one free admission to a Tuesday evening Figure Drawing Group, and you will also recieve student pricing on all other Tuesday evening Figure Drawing Groups. Students will only need to provide an 18x24 newsprint sketch pad, all other materials will be provided by Green Rice Gallery.

Mother/daughter duo Lucy and Rachel Caldwell, and veteran artist Paul Hastings now have working studio spaces within the gallery walls. In celebration of their arrival we will be hosting a welcome gathering on the second gallery crawl of December, which falls on Friday December 12th, from 6-9pm. There will be snacks and beverages, and the artists will be here for you to meet them and see their work!

We just love parties, whether it is an office party, a birthday party, a wedding reception or even a wine tasting, we want to be the venue to host your event! Green Rice is a 2,500 square foot space located in the heart of NoDa. We have convenient parking in the back of the building, and can hold anywhere from 50-150 people depending on your event. Don't worry about decorating, we have all the art you could ever want already adorning our walls!

As far a pricing goes, for a 6 hour/one evening event, the rental fee is $500. If the event goes past midnight, the cost is $100 for each additional hour. "Nostalgia" by Kate Vasseur

I just can't wait! This coming Friday, October 3rd, will be the opening reception for Artist Kate Vasseur's show entitled "Nostalgia". According to Vasseur, her paintings are a blend of fantasy with an element of nostalgia. Images of a bygone era color her canvas as much as her brush strokes do, and her acrylic palette of earthy hues create vast yet intimate landscapes, which can evoke emotion and memories from any viewer.

On October 3rd, we will have an old time popcorn machine, old school candies, and root beer floats for the kids! Bring your family and celebrate this nostalgic experiance at Green Rice Gallery!

Green Rice Gallery is also pleased to introduce a Bostonian native and newcomer to Green Rice, Matthew Hooker. His oil paintings of cityscapes and custom commissions draw the viewer in to experience a depth and realism that few artists can achieve. Natural Surroundings in November...

November will feature local Charlotte artist, Holt McLean’s exhibit, Natural Surroundings. Her Mediterranean inspired works will be celebrated in an artist's reception on Friday, November 7 from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. The exhibit will include more than 30 of McLean’s original works featuring the beauty of her recent trip to Greece along with some of her favorite spots that we all know and love, right here in North Carolina!

McLean, a North Carolina native, pulls people into her artwork by creating familiarity for the viewer. When looking at either her overseas work, or the art from right here in our own backyard, it is not uncommon to find yourself saying, "I've been there!". Holt studied at the International School of Painting, Drawing and Sculpture in Italy, and was greatly influenced by the European Masters. She adopted a classic style of her own that incorporates impasto style palette knife techniques which add texture and boldness to her paintings.

In a compliment to McLean’s work, we will also be including artwork done by myself, Carla Garrison, which feature architectural doorways of the past, the present and the imagination. The show will run from November 7-29 - don't miss it - I know I won't

24 hours and counting...last chance to see Jason Basden's "Story" show here at Green Rice Gallery! Jason's opening reception was on September 5th, and its final day will be tomorrow, September 28th from 12-4.

It has been a great month; Jason's work is imaginative and unique and speaks to everyone. It truly comes from the heart, as each sculpture comes with its own story from days gone by. Made out of found objects, from feathers to precious gems, each figure has a life and personality of its own. Although the show only has one more day here at Green Rice, you can always find work by Jason Basden in our gallery!
